Fam Islands is bordered by Area III Dampier Strait MPA and was declared a protected area by the communities in 2017, which was then reserved by the governor in the same year. Since 2010, the Fam Islands have gradually developed into one of the more popular destinations in Raja Ampat, thanks to the clusters of karst in Pyainemo-part of Raja Ampat's Geopark.
Types of coral reefs in the Fam Islands ranged from fringing reefs to coral patches on slopes and drop-offs, making it an important habitat for many reef fish, pelagics, two species of turtles, manta rays, and some whales and dolphins.
The Raja Ampat MPAs Management Authority, in partnership with NGOs, has developed alternative livelihood initiatives for communities in the three villages through coconut-based products such as natural soap, lotion, massage oil, and virgin coconut oil, and the mangrove-based ecoprint initiative.
