The Kofiau Islands are located in the western part of Raja Ampat, with the majority of the residents originating from the Betew Tribe, another close relative of the Biak Tribe, and some of whom work as both seasonal fishermen and farmers. Like other areas in Raja Ampat, Kofiau possesses high marine biodiversity and a relatively healthy fish biomass.

Apart from its fisheries potentials, Area V Kofiau-Boo Islands MPA is a migrating corridor for various species of whales and dolphins, such as sperm (Physeter macrocephalus), Bryde (Balaenoptera brydei), and killer whales (Orcinus orca), bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus) and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus), and dugongs (Dugong dugon).

With fisheries potential in the Kofiau Islands, the Raja Ampat MPAs Management Authority, with NGO partners, developed an initiative to improve community welfare by increasing the economic value of fish-based products, such as fish floss production.
